Park Academy Science Fair

The girls participated in their first Science Fair.  It was held at the home of one of the families.  Six kids made presentations and Hannah and Alyssa were the first to volunteer and the youngest to present.  Hannah took the lead and read from note cards.  Alyssa pointed to the board as needed.  They easily fielded questions from the audience.  Hannah even came up with answers she didn't know on the fly and spoke with such confidence... a future politician perhaps!  Now to find out how many eggs a butterfly actually lays at one time...

Book Club - The Little House on the Prairie

Hannah has a new friend from American Heritage Girls.  Claire invited her to come to a book club that she was hosting.  This small group of girls had no trouble talking about the book.  They chattered over a snack of cornmeal, apple pie and baked beans. They talked over each other as they answered questions while stringing a necklace of "Indian" beads.  They laughed as they build log cabins with Lincoln logs.

As a side note, we had watched the Disney version awhile ago and as we read the book, found that the book closely followed it.

Book Making

Earlier this year Hannah and I watched a few videos on how to make books. Today we did a scaled down version, making a book for Alana who recently moved away.

Alyssa helped make holes at the folds with a hammer and nail.
Hannah helped sew the pages together.
We looked at a book and determined the pages we needed:
Cover
Title page
Dedication page
Table of Contents
Then the girls each had a part in writing the various pages.

Mad Scientist Club Vol 3

We met to dissect owl pellets, cow eyes and frogs. Alyssa helped with our owl pellet for a little while, but then decided that eating cookie "eyes" would be more fun. She checked in on the cow eye and frogs, looking over shoulders, but it wasn't really her thing. Hannah on the other hand, was completely engaged. SO much so that she asked to take on of the frogs home. (Giving Ryan a bit of a shock when he looked in the fridge the next morning!)

Book Club - The Light Princess

Meg Gambajov hosted our Book Club, led the discussion and created the activities. We matched up scripture verses to the events in the story, made paper boats, and enjoyed wine (grape juice) and bread (vanilla cookies).

This book was written by George MacDonald (10 December 1824 – 18 September 1905) a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister.

Full Cast Studio has a wonderful unabridged audio production with a "fresh voice for every character" that the girls enjoyed listening to. (ISBN 978-1-933322-69-8).
